Fire Camp 2010

Qualicum Beach Fire/Rescue - Fire Camp 2010The Qualicum Beach Fire Department will be organizing a "fire fighting boot camp: for students in Grades 10-12 during Spring Break 2010 (Saturday, March 6-Saturday March 13.) Sixteen students will be selected and those chosen will spend the entire week with the department. They will be billeted and fed at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre and spend the days (and possibly a few hours at night) learning the skills and responsiblities of fire fighters. The officers and members of the QBFD as well as those of Parksville, Dashwood, and Coombs-Hilliers will be responsible for teaching. Some of the skills learned involve: Live fire attack (structural, natural gas, automotive), the extrication of victims trapped in vehicles, CPR and basic first aid, and the proper use of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).One prominent section of the course involves a very thorough, hands-on introduction to forest fire fighting. Since the program's conception, several of the "graduates" have gone on to become volunteer fire fighters in local departments or to choose careers in fire fighting or the BC Ambulance Service. All of the training is done in a very safe, supportive and positive environment. Individual skills, abilities, and confidence levels are always taken into consideration. Students are selected on their level of commitment to the program, and their willingness to participate in a team environment.Students who are interested should speak to Mr. Tomiyama.

Ballenas PAC

Hi Ballenas Parents. There are just a few PAC items worth mentioning as far as upcoming events for Dec.. First, the christmas decorating is scheduled for after school on Monday Dec. 7th @ 3 :30. Angela Virs offered to bring some of her extra decorations so we should have lots. We usually put up a tree and in past years some of the leadership students have helped out. If christmas decorating is your thing and you're free at that time, please join us. It's fun and the students really enjoy it.Also, we were planning to have a quest speaker from some of the departments at Ballenas at our PAC meetings. My thought is that we could give parents notice thru the newsletters, then they could plan to attend for the subjects they are interested in. You might come if you have questions about, say, Math, and what your child should expect in that subject at any particular grade level. You may want tips for success in that subject or you may just want general info from the department head. I don't want to ask these teachers to come to a PAC meeting if there's no interest though, so I'd like to get a response from parents guiding me on the subjects of interest and the number of parents who would likely show up for the meetings. Please e-mail me at : dstrasky@shaw.ca if you want to see that happen and give me some suggestions. Next PAC meeting is Jan.5th.Trish Lublinkhof (250-248-6737), would like some help delivering fruit and veggies to students during class time. This is a nice intro to the heart of the school and a chance to be part of things. Finally, I'd like to comment on the PAC meetings. What I really enjoy about them is the fact that I'm meeting new parents and most especially that every month I get a school report, direct from the principal and vice-principal that lets me know what's going on at the school.. I often know of programs and activities that my kid doesn't know about and I can give them a head's up if it's something they would be interested in. Have a great christmas break. Cora Strasky

CHANGES TO BUSSING REGISTRATION

As in past years, students requesting transportation service must have a bus pass. However, unlike past years, not all students will be eligible for bus service. The District has had to reduce its bus fleet by 8 busses which has resulted in a complete redesign of its transportation system. To do this, the District will enforce walk limits to 3.2 km for kindergarten to Grade 5, 4.0 km for Grades 6 to 8 and 4.8 km for Grades 9 - 12. The system has been designed to assure transportation to their neighbourhood school for students living outside of the walk limits. Please see our website at http://www.sd69.bc.ca/ and click on "Transportation Information" to view the walk limits and collection points for your school. Eligible riders are those students living outside the walk limits of their neighbourhood school. Registration fee for these riders is $40 per student.Courtesy riders are those riders who live within the walk limits of their neighbourhood school or who are cross-boundary, that is, attend a school other than their neighbourhood school. Transportation for courtesy riders will depend on whether there is room on the bus after eligible riders have registered. Priority will be given to the youngest student living furthest from their neighbourhood school, but within the walk limit. Registration fee for courtesy riders is $100 per student. There is an exception to the walk limits for students attending Ballenas Secondary and living at the following locations on the Errington side of the Alberni Highway: Allsbrook, Bellevue, Dobler, Fair, Little Mountain, Price, Smithers. Students living in this area are within the walk limits but are eligible for bus service.PLEASE REGISTER BY SEPTEMBER 11, 2009.After September 11, 2009, all applications, whether they are from eligible or courtesy riders, will be considered on the same basis. PREFERENCE MAY NOT BE GIVEN TO STUDENTS LIVING OUTSIDE OF THE WALK LIMITS IF THE APPLICATION IS RECEIVED AFTER SEPTEMBER 11, 2009.The Board office (100 Jensen Street, Parksville) will remain open until 7:00 pm on Thursday, September 10, 2009 to receive applications.

Principal's Message

The Final ChapterTo finish is a sadness to a writer - a little death. He puts the last word down and it is done. But it isn't really done. The story goes on and leaves the writer behind, for no story is ever done. -John Steinbeck-For the last three years, I have attempted to use the vehicle of this message to capture and share the myriad of good news stories that unfold daily at Ballenas Secondary...the stories that are often missed in the crush of the expedient. Knowing that my secretary would gently nudge me every two weeks for a new principal's message forced me to be vigilant, so as not to miss a potential story. I think that perspective served me well in all of the facets of my role as principal where not every story is a good news story. The act of writing is an interesting one for me. Sir Winston Churchill had it pretty much nailed when he opined, ‘Writing is an adventure. To begin with, it is a toy and an amusement. Then it becomes a mistress; then it becomes a master; then it becomes a tyrant. The last phase is that just as you are about to be reconciled to your servitude, you kill the monster, and fling him to the public.' I have felt each of those phases, though not necessarily as a sequential progression. I do tend to bleed a little bit every time I write. You as readers have been gracious in accepting the sacrificial offerings I have laid before you.To this point in my professional life, I have pretty much been experiencing firsts. My first teaching practicum, my first teaching job, my first lay-off notice, my first department head appointment, my first experience as an adult educator, my first vice principalship, my first principalship. With my recent appointment as acting assistant superintendent of the school district, there has been a shift in my experiential perspective. After 28 years as a school-based educator, I am experiencing a whole bunch of ‘lasts'. Invariably, as I head out the door for an evening event, my wife points-out that this is my last: prom, PAC meeting, band concert...While I am excited about the professional challenges and opportunities that await me in my new role, I would be less than honest if I did not admit that there is a little grieving with each ‘last'. The rhythms of the school year come to reside at almost a molecular level for those of us who work in schools. They are predictable, familiar and comforting. So, if you see me standing off to the side at an event looking somewhat melancholy, know that I am likely lost in processing. Also know, that I would not have accepted this position if I did not believe that I could make a difference for the students, teachers, support staff and parents in our community by doing so. So, while this is my last principal's message, Steinbeck's words could not be truer...the story continues in this place. Find it for yourself each day.Rollie KoopPrincipal

Cross Boundary Requests

Parents of students wishing to attend a school outside of their attendance area next year are required to complete the "Request for Student Transfer" application. These forms must be delivered to the school office by April 1, 2009. Forms may be picked up at a neighbourhood school, and need to be signed first by the principal of the student's current school. All new student transfer forms will be numbered and consideration will be given on a "first come first served" basis. It is not necessary to fill out a renewal form each year. However, students who currently attend a school outside of their attendance area are advised that the district requires a new form to be completed when they move from elementary to middle schools or from middle to secondary out of boundary schools. Wherever possible, requests will be approved. The district does however, reserve the right to rescind any approved cross-boundary transfer up to and including September 30th. The decision to return a student to his/her catchment area school will be based on current legislation regarding class sizes and the enrolment capacity of each school. Further information may be obtained from your school office or by telephoning the School Board Office at 250-248-4241.

BALLENAS BREAKFAST PROGRAM

As announced in June, breakfast will be available from 8-8:30 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday, beginning on Sept. 16th.We are emphasizing nutritious, easy to prepare, and eat, food at a very reasonable price. Based on the suggestions made by students on the survey we conducted last spring, we will begin with the following 4 breakfasts:Breakfast bunwich - bun with egg, salsa and cheese - wrapped in a napkinGranola Cruncher - yoghurt, granola and fruitBreakfast burrito - tortilla with eggs, salsa and refried beans Grilled cheese sandwich and fruitMilk will also be available.Breakfasts will cost $2 each, or $4 per week. There are different options for purchasing breakfast: you are welcome to give us a cheque or cash on a per term basis, or on a monthly basis or you may pay weekly. Students may also pay daily. Having an idea of how many breakfasts we'll be preparing will help us to plan our purchases and save money on wasted food. We also want to accommodate drop-in, breakfast-hungry students. And - if you believe strongly in the program and are able financially, you are welcome to sponsor another student, or to make a donation. No one will be turned away for lack of ability to pay. If you want your youth to eat breakfast, and the cost is an issue, please call Janice McMillan at 250-248-5721, ext. 2915. The cost for the first term, which ends on Nov. 5th is $32.00. Cheques should be made payable to Ballenas Secondary School.Volunteering: If there is enough volunteer support and dollars, we will expand the program to a third day each week. The program will rely heavily on volunteers. We have lots of students lined up, and we need some adults to really make it run smoothly. If you are able to volunteer some time, there are many different areas where we need help, from purchasing to preparation and clean-up. Please call Janice McMillan @ 250-248-5721 or email her at jmcmilla@sd69.bc.ca.Thank you: Already, many partners have contributed to getting this program closer to reality. We would like to thank our PAC for donating money towards the purchase of capital equipment, the Community Links program for it's funding, Kim Grandsen and Colleen Sanderson, Vancouver Island nursing students who did a practicum here working on nutritious menus, and helping us fulfill the requirements for the Breakfast for Learning program funding guidelines, and the Leadership students who collated and analyzed the surveys for us. Thank you all.LET'S BOOST OUR STUDENTS' LEARNING POWER BY EATING BREAKFAST!!
